A Simplistic, Vintage-Infused Amsterdam Living Space

Hi guys, stopping by today to share some snaps I took recently at a living and dining room project I assisted the sweetest couple with a few months ago, who contacted me having purchased their first apartment in a former office block near Amsterdam. They needed some advice with the layout of their living room – which was essentially one large square room that needed to include a living, dining as well as home office area – plus some colour and product advice.

They wanted the space to feel spacious, but warm, and wanted to add some personality to the space. I know you enjoy peeking into the projects I am working on (if my bedroom, studio and this project is any indication) so I visited a couple of weeks ago to see the progress, do some styling and take some snaps for you guys. Take a mini tour and shop the look below!

The moodboard above is some inspiration I drew when gathering ideas for this project. The concept I created for this lovely couple included adding a warm, soft grey tone to the walls to keep the space looking and feeling light and bright while giving it a sense of cosiness at the same time. I wanted to bring in a young, relaxed vibe that didn’t take itself too seriously.

The client had their eye on a blue sofa they wanted to include, so I incorporated blue tones, greys, browns and creams into the colour direction, with some soft nude/blue tones for a dash of colour. Various woods were added throughout the space to add contrast and warmth. We chose a walnut dining table to contrast with he room’s oak floors and light fixtures. Those beautiful vintage chairs hand woven in Danish paper-cord (by my friend Shannon who does the most gorgeous weaving work) are so elegant and the Alki arm chair at the head of the table is a favourite piece and adds the right amount of design to the setting.

Lots of characteristic vintage pieces, pretty accessories, a touch of design and this space is perfectly comfortable for it’s young dwellers and not one bit the cold, white office space it once was.

While the sofa and rocking chair (this thing is sooooo comfortable!) do plenty to boost the comfort factor in the living space all on their own, lots of textiles were added to bring comfort and texture to the space including my favourite mud cloth pillows, a vintage kilim rug from Turkey and pretty patterned pillows. That vintage lamp is very cute I must say. It was all I could do not to slip it in my camera bag and take it home with me! And while I’d love to throw some large art onto the walls, I love how this space is a good balance of feminine and masculine, and incorporates the couple’s love of vintage and music.
