Best of Interior Blogs Award 2016

14.09.16

Hey guys! You may have seen on Instagram that I spent the weekend in Munich, Germany. I went down to attend and celebrate the book launch of another beautiful book I collaborated on this year – ‘Best of Interior‘ the third book in the series ‘Wohnen aus dem wahren leben’ produced by the German publishing house Callwey Verlag. The book features the work of 15 talented European interior design bloggers, their photography, ideas and trend forecasts for the coming year. To coincide with the book launch, Callwey honoured the contributing interior bloggers with an award ceremony to recognise the creative work they are doing. I am thrilled to have been not only nominated for an award (along with the 15 book contributing bloggers) but am deeply honoured to have won one of them too!

The deciding jury consisted of Gudy Herder, a trend and interior expert from Barcelona, Ricarda Nieswandt, who reports about interiors on her blog 23QM Still, and Happy Interior blogger Igor Josifovic. Together they selected the three best submissions in the categories Best Creative Idea, Best Individual Style and Blog of the Year

It was a wonderful evening which took place on the rooftop terrace of the Ambiente Direct showroom. We sipped rosemary infused gin and tonics by Belvedere und Garibaldi, and ate delicious pizza provided by SMEG. It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with some of the lovely folk I have crossed paths with over the years, including the effervescent Gudy of Eclectic Trends who I met years ago when I was just starting this blog, Igor of Happy Interior Blog and Judith de Graaf of JOELIX who launched their very own  Urban Jungle book the same weekend, so happy for you both!

I had fun catching up with Agatha (below) from Passion Shake, as well as Anastasia of Stilzitat who I was VERY excited to finally meet after following her work on IG for ages and she was every bit as lovely as I thought she would be. I loved meeting Jules Villbrandt of Hertz und Blut, who was obviously much loved in the audience because a huge roar of applause sounded when she was awarded Best Interior Blog 2016. So happy for you, Jules. And chatting with fellow award-winner Eva Kindler from Walfriedenstate and her husband was so lovely too, as was catching up with Hege from Hege in France. There were so many new faces too, I wish I could remember everybody but I had such a nice evening.

During the ceremony, the very inspiring Michael Seum (above), Vice President of Grohe, gave a keynote. I was so impressed to find out that he was the creative behind the entire countertop range for KitchenAid among several other achievements – what a guy!

The first award for the evening went to Eva Kindler from the blog Walfriedenstate – she scooped the prize for Best Creative Idea for a very inspiring room she designed in her garden. I had the pleasure of offering Eva a blogging and creative consultation during the Blogging Your Way e-course I taught alongside Holly Becker a few months ago and am so pleased she has been awarded and encouraged in this way.

To an uproar of applause, the very talented Jules Villbrandt of Hertz und Blut scooped Best Interior Blog 2016. A lovely person through and through and clearly very talented with a very sharp eye and distinct Berlin style.

And then, to my great surprise, my name rang out and people cheered, for Avenue Lifestyle had won Best Individual Style! There I am below shaking in my boots as I collected my award from Igor and Ricarda, who felt that my aesthetic and interior style is distinct enough to deserve an award. I can’t thank you guys enough.

I have worked hard the last few years to carve out a space for myself and my vision among a ton of talent on and off the internet. I have dug deep within myself to find an aesthetic that echoes my upbringing in South Africa, my easygoing lifestyle in Australia and the European style I have come to know and love since living abroad for nearly a decade. When I was studying fashion design fresh out of high school I struggled with finding my creative voice and identity in a class full of clever young women who all seemed to know exactly who they were, be it the refined Swedish girl who could sketch like she worked at Vogue or the edgy girl who could wear vintage like no one’s business. I found my voice eventually, but then continued my studies at university where you needed good marks and not a creative voice. It was only when I started this blog that I really started revisiting those feelings again, often with a sense of being overwhelmed and under talented. But there you have it, I have apparently found my voice, and to know that my work is ‘distinctive’ and ‘recognisable’, admired even, is significant to me, and a true compliment.

And the highlight of the evening? That my little girl Lola accompanied me to the ceremony! A chatty little travel companion and the most lovely little thing to return from the stage to, that sweet little face cheering me on as I stood on stage nervous and probably rambling on about my several nationalities, or something else completely off topic.

Congwachoolayshins, mama‘ she said, once I ambled my way off stage. And my heart imploded.

Of course, Lola had to join in on the group photo too! And I wouldn’t have had it any other way. We did get all dressed up, after all. Thank you once again to the three juries who felt I deserved this award, and to Callwey for including my work in another fabulous book. For more snaps of the evening from everyone who attended, follow #boiba16.

Before I sign off, I wanted to say congratulations to the remaining nominees and the talented people who also contributed to the book: House of Valentina, Sweet Living Interior, Fluxi on Tour, Britta Bloggt, Home Lifestyle, Lapinblu, Passion Shake, Ich Liebe Deko, Raum Kroenung, Hege in France, Seelected and Mademoiselle Poirot.

I’ll be back soon to share with you what Lola and I got up to on day two in Munich!
