Colour Files: Rust and Dust

December 8th, 2016

While many exciting things are going on here behind these pretty scenes, all to be revealed in the new year, I am having a serious dusty pink and rusty red moment. I went on a rare solo shopping afternoon a couple of weeks ago for some autumn/winter wardrobe pieces and the shops were strewn with these warm pink and burgundy hues with earthy undertones. Here are a few of my favourite palette appropriate pins of late and why I think this combo works so well.

I am always a little surprised by how each new season brings with it fresh inspiration in colour combinations. We have enjoyed ‘Marsala‘ as colour of the year in 2015 and old pink has made a comeback in recent months too, but the combination of the two feels fresh and new somehow. Both hues feel distinctly 70s, particularly together, but are so very contemporary when used right. If my last blog entry is anything to go by, rust and dust are best combined with calming neutral shades to give a generous dose of colour while still being tranquil and relaxing. Here are a few spaces that exercise this theory, very well indeed. Get the full scoop

Lola’s Bedroom: Before & After!

September 3rd, 2016

Hey everyone! I have been dying to share this space with you for, well, about two and a half years in fact. It is a sweet little girl’s bedroom belonging to my daughter, Lola, and it has been in the making for a really long time. I am a little ashamed to admit how long this project has taken me to complete, but in all honesty, with a full schedule of interior design and photography projects on the go, I end up putting my own home and house to-do list on the back burner. Some things just a little time, and thankfully Lola has been a pretty laid back customer and hasn’t minded the delay. During the summer break, I made Lola’s bedroom my focus and I am thrilled to finally, finally share this sweet space with you. You might remember I shared a sneak peek of it a while back (like, two years ago #mybad). Well brace yourselves for an epic before and after, folks. This one was a long time coming, but with this tour I hope I’ve well and truly made up for it!

Quick recap: We bought our home 2.5 years ago and have been slowly renovating and decorating it ever since. A lot happened in the first few months, as it always does, and then the pace slowed down while we recuperated after getting married, buying a house and replacing our car all in the same 5 month period. Though we’ve done things in between – painting the staircase/hallway, bringing in new furniture, and doing some exterior work – we seem to have really picked up the pace these last couple of months and are moving quite quickly again. We’ve been working in the kitchen, living room and garden and I will share these spaces with you in the coming few months. I shared our bedroom last summer, then my studio tour went live a few months ago, I did a studio update more recently and now I am excited we have wrapped up another room and that our sweet Lola loves it every bit as much as we do.

Colour Files: Trends for 2016

March 23rd, 2016

By now it is quite possible that you know the colours that Pantone selected as the Colour of the Year. For 2016, the world is embracing the two complimentary hues Rose Quartz (a soft, crystal like pink) and Serenity (a pale ice blue) as the two leading hues to influence product development and purchasing decisions in the fashion, beauty, interior and graphic design industries. To be frank, there are not colours I would immediately turn to if designing a grown-up living space however I am seeing more and more spaces popping up on Pinterest that are incorporating these hues, and I must admit, I’m kind of sold.

This is the first time Pantone – the world’s leading colour institute – has ever introduced two colours as their Colour of the Year. These two tones will be a huge game player in all visual and aesthetic fields and I am really noticing it’s influence in the world of interiors. This year’s selection is a delicate balance between warm and gentle Rose Quartz with soothing, cool and tranquil Serenity and it all feels a little sweet to me, but what I do like about this combo is their take on gender neutrality.  Get the full scoop

Inside Scoop: A Joyful, Eclectic Home

March 7th, 2016

It’s been ages since I gave you the Inside Scoop of a home I photographed for publication, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy shooting them! Between working client based projects (finishing spaces to show you guys, I swear!), running workshops and traipsing around the countryside with my camera, I have been keeping myself sufficiently occupied. But with spring just around the corner, the preppy hues in this joyful, eclectic home belonging to Ingrid Janssen of WOOD & WOOL STOOL made this home an easy pick for today’s feature. With bright Moroccan textiles, unique vintage finds, light for days and those heavenly floors, it’s little wonder leading Dutch interiors magazine vtwonen deemed this home worthy of a 14-page spread and it made the pages of decor8 too. Let’s peek inside!

Ingrid and Henk’s 240 square meter family abode boasts beautiful oak herringbone floors throughout and bundles of charm so characteristic of 1930s style homes here in The Netherlands, with all the benefits of a modern home. They purchased it newly built, starting with a concrete interior. Their main splurge was the wooden floor they had a local craftsman create. “With the white walls and the unvarnished floor, the base was just perfect,” Ingrid says.
