Scenes of a Scandinavian Summer

September 3rd, 2018

Hey guys, it’s Holly! Long time no see. Last summer my family and I took to the road for a three week adventure through Denmark and the south East coast of Sweden, in search of nature, serenity and that Scandinavian charm we all love so much. We also camped for the very first time, and I am pleased to report that we survived, unscathed and still married, after staying at three different camp sites along the way (OK annnnd a boutique hotel and charming bed and breakfast because, well, balance)! It occurred to me that I shared some snaps over on Instagram but not here, and after revisiting the images for a photo album I’ve been making from the trip recently, I thought I’d channel the Scandi vibes once more and share some of what we saw and did with you!

Our journey took us from the Netherlands, through Hamburg, Germany, on to the south West coast of Denmark, across a few ferries to the south East coast of Sweden, hopping along the coast until we boarded a ferry to Gotland, and then all the way back home again. I’ve gathered a few of the highlights and for anyone wanting to embark on a similar adventure (with family in tow or solo) with some addresses we went to that we would recommended visit again.

Simple & Smart: Lighting by Vertigo Bird

January 29th, 2018

Late last year we had the pleasure of teaming up with Design Studio Nu once more to shoot a line of contemporary lighting from the Slovenian label Vertigo Bird for their website and social platforms. As always, the girls at Nu took the lead in terms of concept and styling, choosing their new warehouse studio space as the location for the shoot with routed concrete walls and an industrial quality that was hard not to love. It was a fun project that we are excited to share with you today!

Vertigo Bird is a young lighting design house based out of Ljubljana, Slovenia, offering quality, timeless and energy efficient lighting. It was founded by Silvo Kacar of Arcadia Lightware – one of Slovenia’s most successful lighting companies. Silvo had seen the work that we had done previously (here and here) for the furniture label Rex Kralj and wanted to get their ‘simple and smart’ line of lights behind our lens too, starting with their newest products, the KAT flush mount ceiling lamp, the DEMIJOHN pendant with it’s warm wood edging, the cute and practical CONCIERGE wall mounted night light, and the FUNNEL pendant.

Studio Tour: Ask og Eng

December 15th, 2017

One of the things we love most about social media are the connections we have been able to make, the friendships that have been forged, the creative collaborations that have been made a possibility and the inspiration that we are fortunate to have access to on a daily basis. Instagram has been such an integral medium for us to be able to share our own projects and inspire others along the way, but to be inspired ourselves by incredible creative talent all over the globe. One such talent is the Norwegian duo Kine Ask Stenersen and Kristoffer Eng behind Ask og Eng. We connected over Instagram, immediately taken by their beautiful kitchens and overall design ethos, and before we knew it we were headed to Norway to capture their home and studio space on camera. Today, we are thrilled to bring you a full tour of their Drammen studio and showroom, where they design, present and create their bamboo kitchens and furniture.

Husband-and-wife team Kine and Kristoffer founded Ask og Eng in 2016, having designed and built their own sustainable kitchens and furniture over a number of years. Kine’s background in environmental geography and climate change combines with Kristoffer’s background in architecture, resulting in a beautiful brand in which clever design, functionality and sustainability play a key role. Scenes of Milan

June 8th, 2017

Hey guys! The weeks are disappearing before our very eyes as we are busy installing our first interior design projects as a duo (three projects rounding off this month!), shooting several projects for beautiful brands including Rex Kralj, Vertigo Bird and People of the Sun (in Greece!) as well as developing our remote interior design package. We’ve had lots of enquiries coming in from you lovely folks who read this blog and for that we are very grateful. And though time has flown by since we returned from a trip to the Salone del Mobile in Milan we thought we’d drop in today to share some scenes of this urban, bustling and green city for you, and then later today a few trends we picked up on while there.

We had both never been to Milan prior to this trip. In fact, aside from this recent visit, I myself have never been to Italy at all (except for a fleeting two day stint in Florence), a situation I endeavour to rectify on the short term. Obviously, as we were attending the design fair it was all “work work work work work” so we stayed away from tourist sites and focused on wandering the streets (mainly in the Tortona – where we stayed – and Brera areas) and in an out of shows and presentations, stopping intermittently for wine, olives and people-watching. Avenue Studio Tour: Before & After

May 10th, 2017

Hello everyone! Are you dying to see the new studio space as much as we are dying to share it with you? Well, the full scoop is at the ready and we couldn’t be more pleased. We got the keys on the 1st of January and whipped it into shape in record time so we could get to work as fast as possible, and with as little interruption to our current workload as possible. It took us about two months in total to get it ready to show you guys, and we are so in love with the results. Calm, functional and inspiring was the goal and is very much the result! Love it when a plan comes together.

In case you missed it in our partnership announcement a few days ago, the studio is located on the top floor of a beautiful big building in The Hague. The building is majestic and boasts spectacular architecture. It is a former oil company headquarters which now functions as offices and flexible working spaces for professionals from all sectors. When we were looking to move away from our home studios and into an external studio space, the location was as paramount as the first impression – it had to be practical and pretty in equal measures! With both boxes securely ticked (the studio is located exactly between both of our houses), and the perfect space secured, we got straight to work with designing the space. Here’s the full scoop, plus a few before and progress shots because we know you love those! Get the full scoop

Q&A with Holly and Hedda

May 8th, 2017

Hi guys! After months of secret-keeping and scurrying about behind the Avenue scenes getting all manner of things organised, I finally revealed to you that there are now two faces behind this blog -that interior designer Hedda Pier and Avenue Lifestyle (interior styling, editorial and photography studio) have joined forces under the name Avenue Design Studio. In case you missed it, click here to catch up!

With much excitement, we rolled out the announcement accompanied with fresh images taken by the lovely Hanke Arkenbout at our new studio in The Hague, along with an all new ‘About‘ page. But we thought you might like to get to know us as a team a little bit more, and learn a bit about how our partnership came about, so we put together a series of questions which we each answered individually, from the heart. We felt it only fair to throw Hedda right into the deep-end and get her to answer a few questions first, followed by mine. Let’s jump straight to the hot-seat!

A BIG Announcement!

May 7th, 2017

I’ve been hinting that there’s been something exciting brewing behind the scenes here at Avenue for a while now, something that has been all encompassing, scary, thrilling and at the same time calming. Today, finally, after months and months of scheming, organising, analysing and planning, I can share my news with you. I have a business partner! I now share Avenue with Hedda Pier, an interior designer who is not only highly skilled but has been one of my best friends since living in The Netherlands and someone who has unwaveringly offered me support, inspiration and encouragement. That there are now two faces behind a business and brand that has become almost a personal extension of myself is both thrilling and terrifying, for both of us, but I have never felt more calm, creative and in control as I have since we merged in January officially as Avenue Design Studio.

The past two years has been incredibly fast moving for me work-wise and I have grown in leaps on both a personal and professional level. I have split myself between the two sides of Avenue – designing for projects and photographing for magazines and brands – while having two interns who work every day (from the studio in my home), as well as maintaining the blog and social media accounts. I have travelled for work, which is always wonderful but also puts a strain on the work load back home not to mention family life, and have at times been overwhelmed by the fast pace of my working life and the impact the last year of juggling has has on the things I aspire to be doing more of – shooting projects, spaces, people and places, creating original content for the blog, creating and seeking out inspiration in new forms, building new relationships and having fresh new experiences. At the end of the day, if you’re constantly running, there’s little time and energy for creativity and making strategic plans to ensure goals are met. I have big goals and only one set of hands. I see potential in the business I have grown, but have at times felt paralysed with fear to take risks (big and small) and have felt a missing element for a long time. Someone to share the ups, downs, accomplishments, epic fails, inspiration and experiences with. Someone who shares my passion and dreams. I am a people person and solo enterprise can be a lonely thing, I can tell you. And while I regularly collaborate with other creatives, I have intrinsically felt this void for a while. SURPRISE Wedding for Friends!

April 22nd, 2017

It brings me so much joy to share with you a project that kept me sufficiently occupied for much of last year. With the help of friends, family and more than 20 generous sponsors, I threw the ultimate festival wedding as a complete surprise for friends of mine! I know, you all think I’ve gone completely bonkers, and trust me, the thought crossed my mind several times over the last year. In an industry fuelled by the desire to have, acquire and want, I found a way to use my skills and network to simply give, in a selfless, pure and honest way. To people I felt were the most deserving.

On a beautiful late summer’s day, my friends Mimi and Yelke, were wed at the very charming De Lievelinge in Vuren, The Netherlands, in a festival style celebration. The wedding was a COMPLETE SURPRISE to both the bride and groom and was organised and funded in it’s entirety by a group of generous vendors, wedding professionals, friends and family. Theirs was a charming, low key, festival inspired celebration in which love and togetherness – along with food trucks and twinklight lights, wildflowers and Chantilly lace – were the main ingredients.
