The whole idea behind this shoot was keeping the food and styling as effortless as possible, offering up an array of ideas that don’t involve excess hours of prep in the kitchen or formal table settings. Food Files: Roasted Squash and Lentil Soup

December 5th, 2014

As the year draws to a close and icy temperatures prevail, I am turning my energies towards the kitchen and creating meals that are easy, nutritious, substantial and beautiful. And though I’m no Nigella Lawson, I do love food and cooking and the creative process that lies therein. But every now and then I hit a wall {read: my husband starts complaining} and am in need of fresh inspiration. Cue, food stylist Ajda Mehmet. A couple of weeks ago I headed over to Belgium with Ajda in tow to shoot a sophisticated Belgian interior with a food element to accompany the shoot. It was a big day for us both with lots of work getting the place styled up and ready to photograph {with, like, a thousand stairs to run up and down}, which wasn’t helped at all by the glorious fumes of Ajda’s roasted squash and lentil soup wafting through the house. I’m not sure if it was that I’d been teased into total submission all day by the heavenly smells rising from the stove or whether I was just so hungry by the end of the day that I would have gnawed on my own arm, but this soup? It was good! Now, I’ve been witness to the magic of Ajda’s cooking on several occasions now, so I knew it would be good {just the other week I posted about her apple and pear crumble, which I’ve made twice since!} but this soup has changed the way I view soups forever.

Featured: Floral Inspired Bridal Shower

November 23rd, 2014

Hey guys! I hope you have enjoyed the weekend and are ready for a productive and inspiring week ahead! To kick start the week, I have another styled editorial to share with you. A few months back I teamed up with photographer Anouschka Rokebrand and food stylist Ajda Mehmet on something a little different, a styled a bridal shower inspiration session. I gathered together a handful of lovely ladies to model for us and brought together an event that was all about fun and flowers, using the prettiest of props and the freshest of florals. The results are every bit as lovely as I was hoping they would be, and seeing them feature on the pages of Style Me Pretty makes my heart sing.

Floral Inspired Bridal Shower Inspiration // Styling and creative direction: Holly Marder {Avenue Lifestyle} / Photography: Anouschka Rokebrand A little bit about this shoot: When Anouschka asked to create a bridal shower styled shoot, my first thoughts were that it had to be fun with a fresh and feminine theme fit for a group of gorgeous girls to enjoy together. It had to have a joyous feel to it because bridal showers are all about celebrating love and happiness, right? I decided early on that flowers would be the inspiration behind the shoot and as most showers come with an activity for the attendees to get involved in, that activity would be a floral wreath/headband making workshop. I wanted to create an event where the bride-to-be’s closest friends could gather together in celebration of the imminent nuptials by creating a fresh flower crown. To make it as ‘real’ as possible, I also coached the models on how to make a floral headband so they could be photographed actually making one and wearing it afterwards. Get the full scoop

Orchard to Kitchen: A Fall Inspiration Shoot

November 14th, 2014

Fall is a wonderful time of year to get amongst the orchards at harvest time to pluck some crunchy goodness to take home and turn into something warm and sweet. All too often we forget to soak up these simple pleasures. So today I thought I’d take you from the orchards of De Olmenhorst into food stylist Ajda Mehmet‘s kitchen with a collection of dreamy, fall inspired images snapped by the awesome Anouschka Rokebrand, as part of a styled session we collaborated on recently. And the best bit? It comes with a gorgeous recipe for you that I demand that you try this weekend. Seriously.

View More: This shoot was all about celebrating the very best of harvest time in the fall, the crispness in the air, the appreciation of life’s simple pleasures, the perfection of imperfection. That sense of nostalgia that hits when you take the first bite of an age-old apple crumble, all conjured up in a beautiful set of images. The familiar, captured simplistically, yet beautifully and full of emotion. Get the full scoop

Featured: Organic Herb Inspired Cheese Table

April 24th, 2014

Hey guys! I am excited to share a feature with you that I have held on to for quite a while now, a styled cheese table I created inspired by herbs and organic market fresh produce which, thanks to stunning imagery by Anouschka Rokebrand, has featured on the beautiful lifestyle blog Style Me Pretty Living. Here are a few of my favourite shots, but be warned, you’ll need a snack and a glass of wine on hand for this one because it has my mouth watering just thinking of all the delicacies I got to play with for this feature. Oh, and if you’re up for a giggle, there’s a video below captured by cinematographer Ray Pluym of me putting the table together {you’ll have to wait until the end for the bloopers, which almost always occur when one isn’t exactly comfortable with being on film!}. Enjoy!

Simply Slow Get Togethers

January 21st, 2014

Hello! I hope you all enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing weekend. Have you heard of Simply Slow before? They are a small group of like-minded individuals who organise events that aim to spotlight the uniqueness of common products, materials, food and design found in the every day. These events draw on authentic crafts, encouraging attendees to get together, learn a skill and discover the process behind ordinary materials and age old processes. I love the concept, and have a sneaking suspicion you will too!
