Delft Blue Inspired Styled Christmas Table

December 20th, 2013

With Christmas right around the corner, I thought I’d stop by today to share with you a few snaps from a recent styled shoot I threw together for Style Me Pretty Living. I teamed up with the talented photographer Anouschka Rokebrand to bring you guys a festive but understated holiday table drawing on the beautiful blue and white porcelain that is the signature of the town where I live, Delft, as inspiration. This stuff has been around for years, and has fascinated me ever since I came to live in this pretty part of the world. The way it was (and still is) hand painted, each tiny little detail after the next. And the old stuff, the pieces that have faded with time, have chipped and cracked with wear. Oh, it’s beautiful. Take a little peek at the results and I’ll share my inspiration after. The images are way too gorgeous for a long, drawn out introduction, so here you go. Enjoy!

Having grown up in South Africa and Australia and ending up in Delft, the Netherlands, I was – from the moment I arrived on this continent, hugely inspired by all that was European, all that came with a long history and a thousand stories. I am not hugely into the blue and white china upon which Delft Blue porcelain was inspired, but I am quite drawn to the wares originating from this tiny, beautiful part of the world. So when I was gathering ideas for this shoot, I decided that this was my chance to get my hands on some old Delft Blue and have a little fun.

I chose the most exquisite pieces that I could get my hands on for this shoot, the pieces laden with chips and crack, that echo the centuries that have passed. I paired these age old treasures with earthenware, while modern white porcelain offset the older pieces for a more contemporary look and feel. I wanted to highlight the blue and white pieces so kept everything else natural. A collection of earthenware vessels holding sprigs of eucalyptus make a simple and elegant centerpiece, while two suspended stars made from twigs, interwoven with sprigs of eucalyptus and a simple white garland, add a subtle Christmas touch. {I’ll be back soon with a how-to on those, so keep your eyes peeled}. To finish it off, I strung up a couple of eucalyptus springs to the corner of each chair and dotted a few tea-light candles loosely along the centre of the table.  I wanted it to be festive but not too Christmassy, if you know what I mean. The location the shoot was held has a very raw, industrial look and feel about it, and I love how the cathedral style windows acted as a backdrop.

There is a video to come of the setting in the making, so I’ll share that with you when it’s ready!

Sending warm wishes to you all for a joyous Christmas. I hope you will all be sharing these special times with your favourite people. I’ll be spending Christmas with my gorgeous guy and our little Lola girl, just the three of us, no doubt up to our eyeballs in paint!
