Inside Scoop: Tina Fussell’s Copenhagen Home

06.01.15

Hey guys, Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed a peaceful break and are rearing to go again. I’m feeling recharged after some disconnected time and am ready for an awesome year! Our holidays were spent chipping away at our renovation, making huge progress I can’t wait to share with you. I thought I’d kick off 2015 with another Inside Scoop, this time taking you through the Copenhagen home of Tina Fussell {blogger, photographer and stylist behind Traveling Mama} and her lovely family, who have just returned to Denmark after 6 months in the US. You might recall I went to Denmark and Sweden back in March this year with photographer Jansje Klazinga to style and shoot three interiors together. It’s always a waiting game afterwards while the images are sold to magazines and then printed but I am thrilled to see another production published, this time in the January issue of the Dutch magazine Ariadne at Home. Nice way to kick off a new year, right? Let’s step inside Tina’s home.

Tina and her husband Jack Fussell, along with their three gorgeous kids Hailey, Parker and Landon, have called this charming three story Copenhagen townhouse home since 2010, having spent several years living abroad in Spain as well as Morocco. “Officially, we are an American family, but we are truly what you would call global citizens. We live where Jack’s work as an entrepreneur and photographer brings us; moving to Copenhagen was our twentieth!” The ‘Traveling Tribe’, as they call themselves, have based themselves close to the centre of Copenhagen, in a house with a small terrace in a quiet street. “The latter is especially nice for the kids.”

Their Nordic rental, all white from the floors to the ceilings, was a blank slate upon which Tina has layered muted tones and warm textures. My favourite spot in her home was her living room, with tufted olive green sofa, scattering of cushions from Hay, H&M and Normann Copenhagen and eclectic collection of photographs and drawings secured to the wall with masking tape. Tina painted the pink cross at the Woonbeurs in Amsterdam last year {a large annual home and style fair} where she attended as a guest blogger.

It was love at first sight for Tina when she first laid eyes on their home. “I fell for the white walls and floor, and the light in this house,” she says. “The walls and floors reflect a lot of light, which is great not just for the dark Danish winters, but also for our work as photographers.”

The old cabinet in the image above – there is another one in the bedroom – fits exactly between the two front windows and is one of Tina’s favourite spots for styling, often changing the display up with fresh flowers and treasured objects.

“The great thing about this house is that it is heated with a wood stove, which literally and figuratively gives warmth to our white interior,” says Tina. Tina’s favorite design piece is a sleek black chair by Hay. “Occasionally I’ll buy a beautiful piece. I like to mix old and new, and now a little bit of Scandinavian design.”

Tina and Jack’s charming Nordic abode is peppered with pieces both old and new, inexpensive, vintage and design, with pops of muted colour here and there , giving their home warmth and personality. “Colour is important to me. I love gray and pink in particular. This house is not ours, and we do not know exactly how long we stay here, so white is a good base, but I also like to add some colour,” Tina says. Here and there you’ll see a ‘blob’ of old rose: in an oriental print, a scattering of pillows, a bunch of fresh flowers or a Moroccan pouf.

After much deliberation, the couple decided to paint their kitchen wall black to add contrast to an all white space. Being a rental home, it was one of the few things they could do to the space without compromising their rental agreement. “Jack was not initially enthusiastic, but with some pictures from Pinterest I could convince him. The effect is superb: all white now comes into its own.” Read about her kitchen mini make-over, including the wood branch DIY here.

I love the way Tina’s white and wooden kitchen accessories {purchased in Morocco} pop against the dark background, and the splashes of old pink throughout. {Side note: Just look at Tina rocking those heels – in the kitchen! Seriously, she put me to shame. Tina literally looks this fabulous ALL the time!}

Up a bright, white flight of stairs is the master bathroom which features marble tops and simple white tiling and cabinetry, which was updated with black leather handles from Nu interieur|ontwerp. “Little effort, affordable and with great effect,” says Tina.

The master bedroom on the third floor is a cosy retreat laden with plush textiles and bursting with character. Tina displays her favourite clothes on a black rack from Ikea, adding colour and texture to the space, while exposed beams, built-in cabinetry and slanted ceilings delivers the charm.

Tina and Jack fill their home with items they have brought back from their travels or stints abroad, making their style as eclectic as it is charming. The cognac leather ottoman and slippers are souvenirs from Morocco. The cabinet – the same as seen in the living room – serves as a dressing table. Despite the ethnic influences in this space, a flea market found mirror, Eiffel Tower figurine and romantic dressing table styling give the space a quintessentially Parisienne vibe.

“My style is a sum of the places we visited and where we lived,” Tina says. “A mix of old and new, modern and elegant, with a feminine touch here and there. Warm and inviting, because everyone in our family must feel at home.”

On the same level as the master bedroom, the family enjoy this light and versatile studio space, which is where Tina shoots and styles her children’s birthday parties and blog items due to the wonderful light.

The same space also houses Tina’s office, where she pairs an old table with a sheepskin lined Ghost chair. Adorning the wall behind her computer is a collage of black and white family photos and magazine clippings held in place using washi tape. ” There are always fresh flowers on my desk, I love it,” Tina says. Suspended above the desk is a lamp the couple brought back from Morocco.

The studio also acts as a guest sleeping quarters, with an inviting day bed adorned with a Moroccan wedding blanket and scattering of cushions. Tina brought the pink pouf back from Morocco. The master bedroom lies behind a wall of closet space {seen above}.

The second level of the house is the kids’ domain, a large semi-shared bedroom that they divide with the use of a curtain and clothes rack. The couple’s oldest daughter Hailey enjoys a double bed and a black, white and pale pink colour scheme.

Beyond Hailey’s room is the boy’s domain. They each have a single bed with a desk in the middle. A highly placed shelf houses all their knick-knacks. A wall of floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobes gives the kids plenty of storage space.

So what did you think guys? Hasn’t Tina done such a fabulous job decorating her rental house and creating such a warm and inviting home? The moment I stepped inside I loved it and have been dying to share these images ever since! Jansje and I had a ball hanging out with Tina and her family that day, styling, shooting, sharing sushi and chatting the hours away. Thank you, Tina and Jack, for being such fabulous hosts and welcoming us into your home. Tina also joined us on location when we shot Peggy’s house in Malmö the following day as well as the home of Niki from My Scandinavian Home {tour on it’s way to you soon} and made an awesome sidekick!

Jansje and I absolutely ADORED Copenhagen, we were only sad that we were in and out so fast. Next time we’ll be lingering a little longer and soaking up more of the city and the shops. I for one do not need any persuasion!

Hope you guys enjoyed this tour. What’s do you love most about Tina’s home? I’d love to know.

Holly x
