Inside Scoop: Family Friendly Abode by a Dutch Design Duo

28.07.14

Did you guys have a good weekend? I had the great honor of doing the flowers and venue styling for one of my closest friend’s wedding and am feeling exhausted but fulfilled. Here’s a peek at the bouquet I rustled up late last Thursday night for her, which she was thrilled with. {Phew!} Back to work today, and I noticed it’s been a while since I posted on my ‘Inside Scoop‘ column and took you through an inspiring interior that made it’s way behind my lens recently. So to kick off the week, take a tour around the cheerful family home of Dutch designers Tineke Beunders and Nathan Wierink, filled with pastel tones and unique one-of-a-kind finds, which I recently photographed for my Homes with Heart column on Decor8. I had such a great day shooting this lovely fresh space, not to mention the couple’s adorable daughter {who was loving being behind the camera}. Check it out!

“We both love a clutter free home,” say the couple behind the Dutch label Ontwerpduo. “We like things that have a function and are beautiful at the same time.” The duo live within meters of their design studio, making their Eindhoven, Netherlands, family home a practical abode for their young family. But as practical as it is, their modern home is laden with pretty details that mix the old with the new, their own designs as well as the work of fellow designers. Their distinct flair for design has resulted in a charming home filled with quirky details and pops of colour.

My favourite item in their home? A self drawn map illustrating all of the bike routes the couple have taken together over the years through Europe, which hangs above an industrial style self-designed metal cabinet in the living room.

A pastel pink painted concrete floor, makes for a surprising touch to the downstairs floor, working in really well with the one and only prop I took along with me to the shoot, a vintage kilim rug which was a wedding gift from my mother. It’s muted tones worked really well with the colour scheme, and the couple loved it so much they purchased one similar shortly after the shoot for themselves!

I love how this design savvy couple has turned a modern, conventional townhouse into a unique and cheerful home that resonates with their unique sense of style. But their design know-how has also given them the ability to come up with unique ideas and solutions for their home. Exhibit A: The Bedroom.

“We have a very weird bedroom. The 2×5 meter space was the only room in the house which would accommodate a double bed and a wardrobe, so Nathan built our bed between two walls, with curtains at the end of the bed for privacy and also a kind of luxury,” Beunders explains. “It feels very large, despite the size, but it also turns out to be a very useful bed because the baby can’t fall out of it. In the weekend we love to spend our morning hours all together here.”

Clever, right? I also love that they can retreat to a calming white space at the end of a busy day with children and a day full of colour. I have that with my bedroom and it’s blissful.
