Inside Scoop: Vintage Meets Modern in Madrid

11.12.14

It’s been a while since I took you guys into a beautiful space, but today do I have a treat for you! You may have read over on Instagram that I spent a couple of days shooting in Madrid a few weeks ago? Well today I’m excited to walk you through one of the interiors I got to capture – a light, crisp apartment in downtown Madrid, and the results of a mammoth refurb headed by interior designer and my blogger pal Corinne Kowal who turned it’s interior from dark and dated into a bright but soothing space full of charm. Let’s get this party started, shall we?

“My first impression of the flat was gloomy to say the least: very dark, old and outdated, barely any windows and a small space that lacked practicality with tiled floors and dark wood,” Corinne says. “I wondered who would be willing to buy such a place. Apart from the terrace and the amazing location it didn’t have many positive points. You can see some before pictures and a floor plan here.”

Situated on the last floor of an old building, the flat is located minutes away from Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Puerta del Sol, in the very heart of the historic city center of Madrid. It’s owner purchased it as an investment property to be rented outfor short term stays to tourists. “I had the immense luck to have a client that entrusted me completely with the refurbishment of the flat and allowed me complete freedom throughout the entire process.”

The original layout made the small space feel even smaller, so the first thing Corinne did was rethink the floor plan. “I started thinking about the layout and how a simple switch between kitchen and bathroom would enable us to create an open living space with a small opened kitchen, and how by moving an outside wall we could bring back into the flat a bedroom that seemed more like a storage space accessible only through the terrace.”

Thinking long term in terms of renovation, massive oak floors were installed through the entire flat as well as custom made cement tiles in the bathroom and kitchen area. The existing small velux windows were replaced by large ones, another one was added in the terrace facing bedroom and a panoramic window installed in the living room.

“I knew from day one that it would be used as a holiday and short-term rental, so as much as I love color I knew that I would be starting off with a neutral base and adding color through furniture and accessories,” Corinne explains.

“The inspiration mood board that I created came together organically and drew its inspiration from the colors of the city and the terracota roofs. Terracota, greys and slate blue. I wanted to keep a certain urban feel but also to use local materials, associated with Spain, as well as vintage furniture. The images of the Baixa House in Lisbon were a huge inspiration in terms of the feel I wanted to achieve.”

Off the living room is an open floor-to-ceiling kitchen sourced at Ikea. Corinne had beautiful custom ordered cement tiles installed in both the kitchen and bathroom, contrasting with the oak floor and adding pattern and texture to each space without being overwhelming.

Walls throughout the apartment were kept light grey to offset the white woodwork, apart from the wall in the bathroom which was painted Juniper Ash, by The Little Greene. To break up the light walls Corinne curated a unique and eclectic collection of art to scatter throughout the apartment, which were sourced both locally and through the web before being framed by Heredero de Crispin.

Both bedrooms feature colourful linen custom made headboards , vintage rug in terra-cotta and blue tones, one-off vintage pieces and spray of artworks above the bed. Vintage one-of-a-kind wall sconces and vintage side table lend character to each space, while newly installed velux windows ensure the slanted ceilings yield plenty of natural light. Beautiful and fresh flowers are hard to come by in Madrid, but single stemmed floral arrangements sourced at Sally Hambelton are a beautiful and sculptural finishing touch.

The large panoramic windows installed in the living room open the space out, transforming the space from dreary to  vibrant. The sofa was an Ikea purchase, finished off with a set of walnut legs. The cushions and rug from Chhatwal & Jonsson weave in the colour palette of blues and orange tones. At the base of the slanted ceiling, Corinne had an Ikea ‘Besta’ cabinet installed, maximizing this area of the living room. Two plastic woven chairs from Ikea were updated with custom made upholstered cushions, while the vintage coffee table adds texture and charm to the contemporary space.

The wall of windows in the living room leads out onto a charming balcony with sweeping views over downtown Madrid.

Everything about this space appealed to me, but in particular the scatterings of art in the bedrooms and that view! What about you guys? If you’re heading to Madrid and would be interested in renting this lovely apartment, it will soon be available for rent through Spain Select.

Looking for addresses for one-of-a-kind vintage pieces in Madrid? You can find various vintage shops in the Rastro and Las Letras districts. Corinne picked up the wall sconces and bedside table in the master bedroom from Tado. The vintage chest of drawers in the guest room was sourced at Vintage 4P and the wire bedside table was picked up at Igoo. The vintage coffee table in the living room was found at Lou Y Hernandez.

Well that’s it from me! Hope you guys enjoyed this tour. What did you like best? I’d love to read your comments about the apartment in the section below, or if you have any cool tips to share with us for any interior savvy readers who might be traveling to Madrid.
