Sneak Peek of Lola’s Bedroom

23.06.14

Hey guys! Did you have a fantastic weekend? I thought I’d share with you a few snaps taken during a recent shoot in Lola’s new bedroom for a project a very special friend has been working on in which she will be using Lola as her muse. Lola’s bedroom is by no means finished, but we made some progress in the week after the wedding and slowly but surely the space {which just 6 months ago sported orange vinyl floors and blood red walls} is starting to take shape and I’m really loving how light and fresh it’s looking these days.

A little bit about this room. Like our bedroom, we had to paint each and every surface, rip up tired vinyl floors and sand and paint the original wooden floorboards as well as the window frame and sill. All the while, we were doing THIS kind of thing in the room next door as well as a ton of painting and sanding downstairs too! I chose to keep the entire space white, except for the lower half of the walls, which I painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Light Blue’.

With the basics yet to be achieved, decorating plans for this room were put on hold, but one of the latest additions to Lola’s bedroom is the bed. I bought it for a steal second hand several months ago thinking I would give it a quick lick of paint, but then days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and the little red bed was still propped up in the garden awaiting it’s makeover. And as the wedding approached fast a furiously, all manner of home projects fell to the wayside and, alas, plans for Lola’s big girl bed were put on hold…

Until something happened. Something most unpleasant. Something so unpleasant it is actually rather funny, which is why I’m going to tell you about it. Note: this story is not for the faint-hearted:

We attended a neighbourhood barbecue a week after the wedding. It was lovely, and by about 8pm little miss Lola was all played out and looking absolutely spent, all curled up on our neighbours’ fold-out canvas camping chair. I directed my husband to go over and collect her to bring her inside as it was well past her bed time, which he did. As he approached with her in his arms, I noticed with horror that there was a large and very fresh smudge of poo all down the back of her leg, which my husband had clearly overlooked. Eyes wide and crimson with embarrassment, I quickly informed hubs of the situation and we both made our way hurriedly towards the front door so we could attend to this matter {much to the delight of our neighbours and newfound friends, and of course the cause of much giggling!}. This situation would be requiring two of us, that was certain. But before we could pass though the front door, we heard these words {spoken in Dutch but here’s the translation} being uttered hesitantly behind us: “Ehm, guys? I think Lola has… ahem… had a little… accident, because, er… look…” And I turned around to find neighbour from house number 9 bearing a fold-out canvas camping chair, upon which a giant nugget of poo was resting rather precariously, beside which a generous smudge of the latter which had worked its way into the fabric of the seat. Well, laughter erupted {as comments such as “you’re the shitty neighbours! aha haha!” flew through the air} while I died a little bit {read: a LOT} of embarrassment and shame. My child had pood on the neighbour’s chair. We would never live this one down. My head bowed low, I headed straight through the house and into the garden to clean the chair mess, while hubs headed straight upstairs to clean the nappy mess. Before long a head had popped through the window on the top floor, my best friend Lauren curious as to what all the commotion was all about. I ordered her downstairs and one look at that chair and we both knew. It was time. Time for potty training. Time for a big girl bed. Time to stop putting Lola’s bedroom off now that the wedding was over and start with a few major steps towards her being a big girl.

Not the most pleasant story, I know, and I feel terrible that in the rush of moving and renovating and organizing the wedding over the last 5 months, I had not made potty training a proper priority and was perhaps a little too relaxed about it. It really needs all of your attention for a short while, and I just didn’t have it in me. But once the decision was made, it was a matter of a week and it was done.

Meanwhile, we set to work right away on fixing up her little bed. As I’ve never painted metal before, I wasn’t quite sure how I’d go about turning it from fire engine red to white. Spray painting would require a very steady hand and would potentially be a very messy job, so in the end I decided to try using Histor radiator paint which I had left over from our bedroom project. I treated the bed in much the same manner as I did our radiator pipes. I began by sanding the entire frame down, and then sponged the metal surface with a kitchen sponge to get an even finish. The result is lovely and matte. I found a sweet little striped linen bed cover set at a second hand shop for €1,75 {best find ever!} in a soft grayish green. Lola loves her new bed.

While I am very happy with how our original hardwood floors came up painted white, I did feel that the room would benefit from a big colorful rug underfoot. When I spotted this stunner from Pink Rug Co. on Etsy, it had to be mine! I love the life it adds to the space and the lovely texture it offers the room. I think Lola also loves her rug, don’t you think?

We still have much to do in Lola’s bedroom but will tackle it slowly over the coming months along with other rooms around the place. I’ll be sure to share a full room tour as soon as we’ve made some more headway, but for now I hope you enjoyed this little peek into our home and are not completely cringing at my story above. Not my proudest moment, that’s for sure!

Have a wonderful week!
