Wedding Files: Part IV – Love Shoot, Reception & Dinner

30.05.14

This is it, guys! The last ever Wedding Files column that I will ever write! It feels strange as it’s the closure of a huge and all consuming chapter of my life, but it’s wonderful at the same time to have all of these memories to refer back to later on. So by now you have seen the venue and bridal prep, the tables and five gorgeous bridesmaids, and the pre wedding shoot followed by the ceremony. Today I am taking you through the post ceremony love shoot and snippets of our reception. To round the series off, I am also excited to share with you something very special and dear to my heart – our wedding video. Created by Ray Pluym Cinematography, it is a 7 minute peek into our day. Enjoy!

Though the sun finally came out for us after our ceremony in the city hall, the wind was howling and it was still very wet. Nonetheless, we hit our local park for a few snaps. The wind was blowing so hard I thought my veil would go flying off, so my bridesmaids had to hold it to make sure they caught it if that happened! After a short session, we headed over to the reception venue to greet our guests who were enjoying some drinks and snacks and of course, awaiting the arrival of the newlyweds!

This gorgeous girl above is the very talented stylist Ciara from Style Serendipity. We met online through our blogs, met when we attended a conference last year and hit it off instantly. I joined her earlier this year in Tuscany to assist her on a styled editorial shoot for Sibo Designs and had a ball, and I was so excited when she arrived the day before the wedding (in the pouring rain!)  to help me style the tables and venue. She and her husband did the most amazing job and I will be forever grateful to them both. Thank you, Ciara and Rian!

Our wedding caters, Femke and Eddy from Hééérlijk, did such a fabulous job of translating our wish to have a very relaxed, low-key dinner with our guests with wholesome, locally sourced produce made into a delicious menu served Italian family style along the middle of the tables. It was everything that I had hoped for. Our guests said it was “as if they were at a dinner party at our home”, that is was “really relaxed and there was a great energy in the room”.

The menu went a little something like this:

H’ORDEUVRES

Olives / Rolls of Serrano ham, fig, cream cheese, rocket and pine nuts / Bruschetta with tomato tapenade / Bruschetta with pea and mint mousse / goats cheese, honey and pine nut tartlets

STARTER

Antipasti of thinly sliced Italian cold cuts / Melon wrapped in Serrano ham / Fresh figs / Home made foccacia

MAIN
Garlic and rosemary baked potatoes / Grilled seasonal vegetables / Fresh and leafy green garden salad with roasted pine nuts and fig and date vinegar / Italian salad of cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and balsamic dressing / Lentil salad with roasted vegetables and feta / Fresh baked bread with home made tapenade and aioli / Lamb and pork roasted on the spit

DESSERT

Cheese platters featuring various beautiful cheeses, dried fruit, fig and date bread / wedding cake which was soft, spongy and delicious, decorated with a giant coral peony and a sprig of eucalyptus

In short. Our kind of food! Thank you Femke and Eddy for bringing this vision to life!

The tables were designed by me, and painstakingly pieces together over the course of several months. You can read all about it in THIS post but in short, I made my own table runners, napkins, tiny jam favors and berry skewers (with the help of friends and family), brought in the most stunning bone and silver cutlery and brass candlesticks from Hélène Millot Furnishings, plates from Ikea and salad and dessert plates from VerTerra Dinnerware. In the days leading up to the wedding, I scoured all the local thrift stores for different vintage, earthenware and terra-cotta bowls to accommodate the food (I bought about 32 of them!), and sourced all of the florals for the wedding from three different suppliers locally to design myself. For our bouquets, I wanted loose, organic, wild, enchanting and feminine. For thee tables, I wanted sweet simplicity. I chose a singular delicate thread of fresh jasmine to run the lengths of the tables. It was a huge amount of work, organising, planning, fetching and carrying, but the tables, menu, food and atmosphere turned out exactly as I had hoped for.

The cafe lights were a bit of a funny (read: not funny at all) story that began with the supplier saying they ones I ordered weren’t in stock three says before my wedding and ended in my Dad driving 6 hours return to collect them and bring them to the venue the day before the wedding! They made a huge difference however to the atmosphere in what was a large, industrial and potentially cold room. They also gave the room that garden party feel we were going for so I owe my Dad BIG time! Here we are below having a few snaps together with my Mum.

The speeches hold some of the most precious memories of our day. There weren’t too many, but those who spoke (us, our best man, two of our bridesmaids did a joint speech, and my father) all said the most beautiful things that really made our day. My husband surprised me and the whole room by giving the most heart felt, touching speech. I will never forget the words he spoke about me. Some of it can be heard in the video below. I also said a few words of sentiment to my husband and thanked those closest to me and those who helped to bring our day together. After the speeches, it was time to christen that dance floor with a first dance! And boy, was it a party after that, which ended all too soon…
