Studio Tour: Ask og Eng

One of the things we love most about social media are the connections we have been able to make, the friendships that have been forged, the creative collaborations that have been made a possibility and the inspiration that we are fortunate to have access to on a daily basis. Instagram has been such an integral medium for us to be able to share our own projects and inspire others along the way, but to be inspired ourselves by incredible creative talent all over the globe. One such talent is the Norwegian duo Kine Ask Stenersen and Kristoffer Eng behind Ask og Eng. We connected over Instagram, immediately taken by their beautiful kitchens and overall design ethos, and before we knew it we were headed to Norway to capture their home and studio space on camera. Today, we are thrilled to bring you a full tour of their Drammen studio and showroom, where they design, present and create their bamboo kitchens and furniture.

Husband-and-wife team Kine and Kristoffer founded Ask og Eng in 2016, having designed and built their own sustainable kitchens and furniture over a number of years. Kine’s background in environmental geography and climate change combines with Kristoffer’s background in architecture, resulting in a beautiful brand in which clever design, functionality and sustainability play a key role. Project Miami | The Reveal

This post has been a long time coming, guys! There have been hints dropped on Instagram about a project we have recently rounded off in Miami, Florida. It’s been a year and a half in the making and it brings me so much joy to be able to share with you the results that we captured while on location a few weeks ago for the final install. Today we’ll walk you through the process, including the before shots we know you love so much, some of our designs and the finished results! Let’s jump straight in. 

I (Holly) took this project on a year and a half ago – before my merge with Hedda though she was a huge support throughout the process because an international interior design project is no easy feat, I can tell you! The project was a full tear-out, renovation and redesign of a two bed, three bath penthouse apartment. And we did it all from the other side of the world. People of the Sun African Homewares

You might recall we were recently hired to style and shoot in Greece for People of the Sun, a Malawi based furniture and homewares label that supports the local African economy by working with artisans and utilising their indigenous skills. They lovingly create a range of beautiful, hand made products for the home which we flew over to Athens to capture for People of the Sun’s new website and catalogue. Take a peek at our favourite shots below!

The goal for this shoot was to show how these beautiful African pieces translate in a European, contemporary interior, and to demonstrate how well they work with modern and classical furniture styles. People often don’t know how to style African pieces in their homes because they tend to be very ‘present’ and with this shoot we wanted to show how you can achieve balance but still highlight the ethic influences.

We based the shoot around a stunning apartment with high ceilings and classical detailing, and home to architect Dimitris Karampatakis of K Studio and artist Joanna Burtenshaw and the results were nothing short of splendid. We used primarily their own gorgeous furniture and art but also brought in various props to tell the story. I even travelled over there with books and ceramics in my backpack and carry on luggage. Muscle abuse like this is an occupational hazard, I tell you. For now though, let’s dive into the pretty pictures, shall we?

Hedda’s Bedroom Tour

Hi guys! It’s Hedda here. With Holly away in Sweden soaking up nature and having some down time, and a relative calm settling on the studio, I thought it would be a good time to do my first blog post (yikes!). What better way to start than with one of our favourite spaces to design: the bedroom. In this case MY bedroom. Our bedrooms are such a personal space, and for those of us with children in particular, a place to retreat and relax. So let’s get started with a little tour of my bedroom.

When we bought our 1930’s terrace house in December 2014, it was ‘unsellable’ and had been on the market for nearly two years. It had a bad case of subsidence, orange and green 70’s tiling in kitchen and bathroom, and layers upon layers of flowery wallpaper. I know this because I peeled them off myself. Also, our bedroom floor was literally at an angle. Of course, I immediately I thought ‘wow, this is a perfect house!’. Five months of renovations followed, among other things we extended at the back, thereby creating a large balcony off our master bedroom with french windows letting in plenty of light. Two other choices also made a big impact on our bedroom 1. we took out the fire place that was on the wall where we now have the bed 2. we decided to use the box room adjacent to our bedroom as a seperate dressing room. This meant that although the master bedroom is small, it is open and clutter free. Get the full scoop

Interior Design Reveal: Project Kralingen

Hey guys, dropping in today to share one of our most recent interior design projects! We started this one in January this year for a young couple – one of whom is architect partner Stefan Prins of Rotterdam-based Powerhouse Company – who have spent the last three years tirelessly designing and building their dream ‘green’ home in an up-and-coming neighbourhood in Rotterdam. It was such an honour to have been asked to help them with the interior design and we are all thrilled with the results. Take a tour of their beautiful, contemporary home below!

When we started this project, it was the middle of winter and the house was in the throws of being built. Our clients were ready for a warm and cozy home and literally couldn’t wait to get started on the interior design after all the design and build work. We didn’t need any more persuasion before getting straight to work on the concepts for the living and dining area. We have corralled together our design inspiration, the design process and of course the full tour of the finished spaces.

Inside Scoop: Belgian Country Charm

Just recently we jumped in the car and drove to the bottom of the country and just over the Belgian border, to style and shoot a charming old country house. The moment we stepped inside we fell for the striking patterned floor tiles (original to the house and discovered by accident) and the rest was history. Aside from being completely charming herself, the home of Liza van der Stouwe of Atelier Rozijntjes, her husband Vincent and their three children is far too charming not to share, and having recently featured in vtwonen magazine, we felt it was high time we brought you a long overdue ‘Inside Scoop’. We hope you enjoy this full home tour of a family abode bursting with Belgian country charm every bit as much as we enjoyed documenting it. Living a country life in Belgium wasn’t exactly the dream for high school sweethearts Liza and Vincent, who took over the rental of their 182m2 house a decade ago, falling for it’s charm, spaciousness and sweeping views the moment they stepped inside. The elderly landlords granted liberty to update the dated interior to their heart’s content with one condition – that the wooden staircase and upstairs floorboards remain intact. Get the full scoop

Trends We’re Coveting Right Now

Earlier today we shared some snaps of our recent trip to Milan to visit the Salone del Mobile, the international furniture and trade fair attending by hundreds of thousands of industry professionals each year. It was certainly an eye-opener as a first time visitor and at times overwhelming with the sheer amount of information to take in. We returned to the studio with a suitcase filled with fresh and inspiring new catalogues, samples and contacts in the industry, as well as some fresh new inspiration and lots of energy to put some of the trends we spotted into action! We have scoured the net since returning to the studio and have put together our top 3 trends that we’re coveting right now, showing you how to make them work in your own homes and projects.

PATTERN TREND | LINES

Not that stripes or lines of the vertical and horizontal nature are original by any means, but we have spotted more and more examples of primarily vertical lines in architecture, interior design (from materials to finishes) and textile design of late and we can’t help but be drawn in by the simplicity yet intricacy they bring to spaces and structures alike. Clean, contemporary and striking, it’s incredible how a vertical collection of lines can elevate a space. We had already been applying this inspiration to several projects, but here is a collection of examples that are totally floating our boats right now.

Scenes of Milan

Hey guys! The weeks are disappearing before our very eyes as we are busy installing our first interior design projects as a duo (three projects rounding off this month!), shooting several projects for beautiful brands including Rex Kralj, Vertigo Bird and People of the Sun (in Greece!) as well as developing our remote interior design package. We’ve had lots of enquiries coming in from you lovely folks who read this blog and for that we are very grateful. And though time has flown by since we returned from a trip to the Salone del Mobile in Milan we thought we’d drop in today to share some scenes of this urban, bustling and green city for you, and then later today a few trends we picked up on while there.

We had both never been to Milan prior to this trip. In fact, aside from this recent visit, I myself have never been to Italy at all (except for a fleeting two day stint in Florence), a situation I endeavour to rectify on the short term. Obviously, as we were attending the design fair it was all “work work work work work” so we stayed away from tourist sites and focused on wandering the streets (mainly in the Tortona – where we stayed – and Brera areas) and in an out of shows and presentations, stopping intermittently for wine, olives and people-watching.
