08.10.15

Hey guys, not sure if you know them already but there’s a new kid on the block and they do really a small range of minimalistic and beautiful homewares I think you’ll love as much as I do. Meet HAUSMERK. They are a Belgian label based in Brussels, founded by design duo Mimy A. Diar and Ad Luijten. Today I want to introduce you to these cool cats by sharing some shots of my favourite products in their range styled in my own home. And we all like a giveaway, so after you’ve read all about them and their story and design process below, head down below to see how you could win one a gorgeous SOIL ‘Bird of Paradise’ illustrations printed on wood. There are two up for grabs!

// What is the background behind Hausmerk and how long have you been in business? Who are the designers?

Hausmerk started off as a spin-off project of Beaverhausen, our design studio where we create designs for international design editors. In 2014 we decided to design several small home accessories that we could market ourselves. But for this project we wanted to operate under a different name. The name Hausmerk is derived from the Dutch word ‘huismerk’. For us it doesn’t only mean ‘home brand’ but it’s also the private label of our design studio Beaverhausen.

// How would you describe the Hausmerk aesthetic? Which type of interiors do you think your products look best in?

Each Hausmerk design is sprinkled with architectural influences and shares the same sense of storytelling simplicity.

We believe our products feel right at home in several types of interiors. It doesn’t really matter if they are placed in a minimalistic white interior or in a more colourful vintage setting, for example – we like both styles ourselves. It’s all about making the right combinations on a personal level.

// Where and how are your products made? Do you have a shop or studio? If so, what is it like and where is it located?

All our products are proudly made in Belgium. That was a deliberate choice from day one. Not only to reduce our carbon footprint but mainly because it allows us to use the knowhow of local craftsmen. Belgium has a rich history of making things and we’re pleased to have found suppliers that help us to obtain the desired quality.

We’ve created a small studio space in our own house, which was built around 1870 we believe. It’s got beautiful high ceilings, an old wooden floor and a few desks with computers, packing materials and some product stock. It’s close to the railway track in an area with lots of industrial history such as a big converted brewery and some converted shoe factories, which our neighbourhood was renowned for back in the day.

// What does a typical day look like in the Hausmerk studio?

Every day begins with checking new orders and making sure we have all the items required in stock. Then we start packing and we prepare them for pick up by our carrier. We love this part of the day because we feel it’s a huge compliment when people want our products in their homes.

Since we’re a team of only two we do everything ourselves: from photography to graphics and from press to packing. And, off course, we also design everything. All this is quite time consuming but we absolutely love it.

We don’t commute to work therefor a daily walk is just as important to us. Sometimes to grab something to eat or drink, other times to simply clear our heads or to get inspired.

// What is your bestselling product and why?

We have two actually; the Soil wooden illustrations and the Dome table mirror. People seem to like them because they’re understated fun designs, quite accessible and they seem to fit in different kinds of interiors. But the same goes for our other products as well. So to answer your second question; we don’t really know.

// What current designers and trends are you inspired by? How does your inspiration translate to your designs?

All Hausmerk products are in some way inspired by architecture. Some by the tools used to make buildings – our Troffel candleholder is based on a masonry trowel – while others can be inspired by an architectural period. Our Nouveau Art illustrations for example are a direct reference to the natural forms and structures of art nouveau, a movement heavily represented in Brussels. It’s a city with a rich architectural history from different eras. So you could say we’re genuinely inspired by our surroundings and way of living. This translates into our designs through the use of materials, things like overall proportions or the ideology behind an object.
