Inside Scoop: Sweet Pastel Style in Belgium

22.01.15

It’s always a buzz when I see my work in print. This week something sweet popped through the letterbox – the home tour I shot for my decor8 column made the cover of the German title Sweet Living Magazin! Sweet Living has been wonderful about supporting my work, and have featured me on the cover on several occasions now, but it remains exciting every time. For this feature I went inside the charming Belgium home of Yvonne Eijkenduijn, a photographer, blogger and the author of the books Yvestown in the Kitchen and the Weekend Ontbijtboek {a gorgeous little breakfast book}.

SweetLiving_Titel 2_15 Yvonne and her husband Boris have spent the best part of the last 6 years renovating their home on the Belgian border, which dates back to 1896. The results? A space that exudes love, light and Yvonne’s feminine sense of style. Throughout the renovation, the couple have maintained the home’s original features, giving it a fresh new lease on life while respecting the history behind the property. You can read all about the renovation process HERE.

Yvonne and Bo have been renovating their house in stages, doing one room at a time over the course of the past 6 years. They are almost finished renovating the ground floor and will be focusing their attention upstairs.

Their living room is their most recent project. They stripped the brown-carpet laden floors in favor of crisp white wood, installed a wall-to-wall floor-to-ceiling book shelf and TV unit and breathed fresh new life into the original fire surround which was previously dark wood and stretched up to the ceiling. You can catch a glimpse of how this room looked before HERE (from a story I did on this house a few years ago) and read about the process of this space HERE and HERE. So much detail work was done in this room, including pops of Cath Kidston floral wallpaper and beautiful classical moulding, all finished off with Yvonne’ signature ‘Scandinavian Pretty’ style.

If Yvonne’s home isn’t a beautiful example of consistency and attention to detail in decorating, then I don’t know what is. With each and every choice she has made concerning furniture, colour and accessory choices, Yvonne has been consistent, careful to ensure every room echoes her signature aesthetic – English country meets Scandinavian style.

The dining room in the same space features a pastel pink china cupboard which houses a prized collection of china which Yvonne has scoured over the course of years. I love the spray of vintage side plates on the wall, as opposed to a more uniform arrangement. Yvonne customized an Ikea sideboard with a slab of wood on the top and sides, adding a sense of earthiness to the space, contrasting nicely with the sweet pastels. A Piet Hein Eek floor lamp adds an industrial touch.

The room above is Yvonne and Bo’s sitting room. They use this space to relax, unwind and read. The space was first used as Yvonne’s home office, but the front room (shown below) is now the home office and the place where Yvonne gets creative, shoots images for her blog and books and writes.

The home office employs the same light, bright touches seen throughout the rest of the house, with floral wallpaper and feminine touches as far as the eye can see. Yvonne combines vintage pieces she has acquired over the years from markets and antique shops, with contemporary design pieces. Read about her favourite vintage finds HERE in a piece I wrote for 91 Magazine.

The kitchen is the hub of Yvonne’s home, and the place where she creates the magic that happens in her books. Its a functional space, bursting with personality. While I was shooting her home, Yvonne was busily baking the most heavenly scones. I’ll have to share the recipe with you!

Through that little blue door is a guest bathroom – the prettiest guest bathroom I have laid eyes on to be precise – complete with pale blue and white polka dot wallpaper and vintage accessories. The portuguese tile underfoot is a surprising, charming element.

The kitchen leads out into the mud room, where the garden can be accessed though French doors.

I have visited Yvonne at her home on several occasions and each time has been such a lovely experience. It’s like stepping into another world, where everything is lovely and sunny and endlessly charming. I have seen this home grow since first stepping inside it’s doors in 2011 and am so grateful to have shared a glimpse into Yvonne and Bo’s interior and renovation journey. They have certainly been inspirational to me and my own renovating process. Thank you both so much for allowing me to document your story on so many occasions.
